After being comatose last night and waking up like I had been asleep for a year, I was up and out early to explore Brooklyn a little more as not done that at all in my previous visits (other than walking over the bridge).
I stopped off at a smoothie place first, I love all of them in the States, I reckon I could live off fruit smoothies here no problem at all.
I started this ‘walking tour’ at Barclays Center and stopped at a load of places. I have to say though, because it was early it was FREEZING! This may be the only time in my 4 times to the States so far when it’s not snowing but it is just as cold.
Atlantic Avenue
After a five-minute walk, you will reach Atlantic Avenue – a commercial street that serves as the boundary between Brooklyn Heights to the north and the neighborhoods of Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill to the south
Albee Square
This 27,000-square-foot public plaza adjacent to the historic Dime Savings Bank building hosts numerous free public events, including the BK Block Party children’s summer performance series, as well as a weekly farmers market during the summer months
Montague Street
Montague Street is considered by many to be the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood’s “Main Street.” The district boasts dozens of restaurants, ranging from Japanese to Polish-American cuisine, and a diverse variety of shopping options.
Brooklyn Cultural District
Home to more than 60 organisations in music, dance and arts.
Williamsburgh Savings Bank
The tower was an expansion of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank – one of Brooklyn’s earliest financial institutions which began operations in 1851. Although today the tower has been converted into upscale condominiums, the building has retained much of its original architectural characte
Fulton Street
A long-time shopping epicenter in Downtown Brooklyn, Fulton Street has banned personal automobiles since 1976.
Brooklyn Heights
At the end of Montague Street is the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, a third of a mile-long pedestrianized esplanade offering sweeping views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, and the Brooklyn Bridge. The Promenade was built in 1950 after a local preservationist group, the Brooklyn Heights Association, thwarted a proposal that would have constructed an expressway through the historic district.
MetroTech Center
A 3.5-acre urban plaza, lined with trees, benches, and public art, surrounded by several office buildings that define Downtown Brooklyn’s Business District.
After that I headed to Manhattan for some breakfast, and I went to Legends Bar which is near where I stayed last time. I went there because I loved the pancakes, sausage and bacon but found out they only do this on the weekends so I had wasted a trek. Anyway, I stayed for a drink and then went off to do some shopping near Times Square. I bought some stuff in Macy’s and then set off to the New York Arsenal Supporters Club: The Blind Pig. I’d been here each time I’ve visited New York but none of the games were as big or nerve wracking as this one, simply because I detest Liverpool and everything about them.
The Angry Orchard was flowing again, and I met up with Jamie who I met the 2nd time I came to New York at The Arsenal bar. The game was crazy and obviously ended in disappointment after we conceded in the last minute to make it 3-3. I was pretty gutted but would have been a lot worse if City hadn’t drew to Everton 15 minutes before, so I was trying to see the positives.
After the game I went to Times Square to see the Star Wars film at the iMax and I didn’t think much of it to be fair, but I can’t claim to be a huge Star Wars fan anyway. I think sometimes people decide it’s amazing before even watching it, I thought it was boring anyway.
I headed back after the film and watched a bit of Ice Hockey, big day tomorrow with the Isles/Rangers derby. It’s my first and the place is going to be rocking, I cannot wait!
Highlight of the day though, has to be hearing a real life African American say ‘Kiss my black ass’. It’s the first time I’ve heard it in real life, with the full on accent etc and it was gloriously memorable. I should point out he wasn’t saying it at me but I had to try really hard to keep a massive grin contained. Small things please small minds and all that. Still not sure it rivals our Vegas taxi driver when he said ‘go and get yoself some of that chocolate cake ass’.
Kiss my white ass, and I will be back tomorrow.
